SILVERMINE GUILD SHOWS OFF NEW MEMBERS


Abstract expressionism is alive and well at the Silvermine Guild Arts Center and can be seen in works by 22 newly elected guild members. Most of the new members are Connecticut residents, with a handful of artists from New York. The exhibit has a wide range of mediums including painting, mixed media, drawing, sculpture, photography and prints. Kim Hanna’s oil on panel “Night Flight” illuminates globular shapes moving in a murky environment. The thick atmosphere unleashes an aurora borealis gone awry, leaving the essence of dazzle. “Woman in Blue Veil,” a mixed-media piece of Hanna’s recalls a classic icon painting of the Madonna, but here she is lopsided. Her oblique, angular face peers out from swaths of material and thick yellow paint, deepening the black skin and empty black eyes that have a seeing consciousness…

The new guild members, elected last year by a jury of artist peers, include seven painters, five printmakers, five artists working in mixed-media, one in drawing, two sculptors and two photographers...
